Every month, HOBA partners with Independent Television Service (ITVS) to host Community Cinema. The Oakland Asian Cultural Center and the San Francisco Public Library hosts these free community events. Come join us for the monthly film screening and panel discussion!

Garbage Dreams
Welcome to the world's largest garbage village located on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. The Zaballeen (Arabic for garbage people) recycle 80 percent of the trash they collect‹far more than other recycling initiatives. But now a multi-national corporation threatens their livelihood. What is Community Cinema?
ITVS Community Cinema is a monthly film screening series showcasing the Emmy - Award winning PBS series Independent Lens. Screenings are followed by lively panel discussions and audience Q & A in order to connect communities with relevant organizations, resources and opportunities to get involved in some of today's key social issues. What is ITVS?
ITVS brings to local, national and international audiences high-quality, content-rich programs created by a diverse body of independent producers. ITVS programs take creative risks, explore complex issues, and express points of view seldom seen on commercial or public television. ITVS programming reflects voices and visions of underrepresented communities and addresses the needs of underserved audiences, particularly minorities and children.
What are my responsibilities if I decide to sign up for the film screening?
Come, sit in the audience, enjoy the documentary film, and participate afterwards by listening and/or asking questions in a thought-provoking panel discussion. In San Francisco, individuals will be viewing the film and will NOT be volunteering. In Oakland, volunteers will assist with various aspects of the screening in addition to watching the documentary.
