What We Do
HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA) creates opportunities for people to volunteer, learn and lead in their communities. We strive to provide volunteers with a high-quality experience that fuels further action, and we envision a day when everyone is inspired and equipped to be the change they wish to see in the world.
Our Approach
HOBA staff works with local nonprofits, schools and parks to identify high-impact, group-based volunteer projects. These projects may meet an ongoing need of an organization or its clients, or they may be one-time, large-scale transformations of facilities or green spaces. Then, we recruit volunteers to get the job done and match each project with a trained Project Leader to ensure that both the community partner and the volunteers are satisfied with the work.
Not only do we manage 120 direct-service projects a month, we offer educational programming to help volunteers become well-informed community leaders. HOBA’s book clubs, film screenings and leadership training allow community members to deepen their knowledge of community issues, develop personally and professionally and learn effective tools to create change.
To accommodate busy schedules, we offer our programs on weekends and evenings, and through hoba.org, we give volunteers an easy way to sign up for projects, track their service hours and learn about new opportunities.
For corporate clients, we offer comprehensive planning services for employee volunteer events. We work with companies to further their corporate social responsibility goals by engaging their employees in hands-on service. Our Impact
Our volunteer projects provide more than 65,000 hours of service to more than 200 nonprofits across the Bay Area, meeting critical community needs including education and literacy, HIV/AIDS, health and aging, homelessness and hunger, and the environment. In 2008, HOBA hosted over 200 service-learning events, and our Leadership Institute Fellowship Team (LIFT), a year-long immersion into nonprofit management, has graduated over two dozen new community leaders.
Our Network
HandsOn Bay Area is an affiliate of HandsOn Network, an alliance of innovative volunteer management organizations across the country and around the world.
HandsOn Network & Points of Light Institute’s collective network - now the largest in the nation - works with 83% of people volunteering in America each year, engaging more than 70,000 nonprofits, government agencies, faith based organizations and companies to get involved and make change happen in their communities. Not only are the 250 Action Centers (Affiliates) in the United States plugging people into volunteer opportunities and resources, but also the 12 international locations managing millions of volunteers and 50,000 volunteer-driven community impact projects annually around the country.
